What is a chair for a child growing up in the informal settlement of Darb el Ahmar? This was the theme of a workshop where design students, young designers and children between the ages of 11 and 15 collaborated. Their materials were everything and anything they could scrap out of their environment the roofs of their shacks, and discarded debris in the abandoned plots. The roles were alternated and the learning was on all sides. The environment of scarcity was the learning fields.

Both the children and the young designers discovered new realms of creative thinking, not only in terms of product ideas, but more importantly in terms of communication and cross pollination. This workshop was organized in collaboration with the Aga Khan Foundation, which is running a major project for the urban development of Darb el Ahmar.
